The Gita is a dialogue between Arjuna, a famous and decorated warrior, and his higher self, Krishna, who is counseling him. Arjuna’s uncle has wrongly taken the throne and is reigning with a cruel and unrighteous hand. For the good of the land and the people, Arjuna and his five brothers, one of whom is Bima, the rightful heir, are standing against this corrupt and unconscious reign.
Arjuna looks across the battlefield and sees so many people from his past that he loves including his cousins, teachers, and friends. He is overwrought with emotion and dread at having to kill those he loves and falls despondent to the ground dropping his weapons.
He asks Krishna to help him to see clearly. What follows is an extraordinary teaching on the deathless nature of the soul, how to master the mind, live with integrity, purity, strength, discipline, honesty, and kindness.
The timeless teachings Krishna shares are immediately relevant to all of us, as we each have our own inner battlefield. At any given moment will we fall prey to the unconscious ego demands, or will we tap into our higher self? Will we gather the strength to slay the demons of our past, to detach from old identities that hold us in unconscious patterns, or will we fall asleep at the wheel of life and create suffering for ourselves and others?
The wisdom Krishna references is awakened in us through the practice of yoga.
